What Do You Do?

by David on October 5, 2010

THE FIRST QUESTION I ask people who call me for their free 30-minute consultation, of course after I ask “how do you do”, is “what do you do”?

The typical answer I receive is something about the product that they sell or what kind of professional service they offer. Which I tell them while it is true, that it is not something that will inspire or capture the imagination of their potential client from a marketing perspective.

Don’t misunderstand, I’m not trying to hear the so-called elevator pitch either, I’m looking for a simple easy to understand phrase that combines an action (give, teach, sell, etc.), and a whom ( music lovers, car owners, tap dancers, etc.), with a result (unlimited wealth, hope, happiness, etc.).

For example: I am not a small business marketing expert…I coach small business owners to success.

As soon as I have coached out of them their “what do you do”…the real fun of marketing begins. With that target in mind we build an entire marketing strategy around their product or service

So think about it, what do you do? Then call for your free 30-minute consultation. I look forward to talking with you about turning your small business idea into a small business success story.

B!gShots Bottom Line: understanding who you are and what you do is a necessary step before telling everybody else
